OBJECTIVES: To observe the clinical effect and safety of auricular point sticking combined with periocular needle-embedding therapy for pseudomyopia and prevention of true myopia. METHODS: A total of 269 children with pseudomyopia were randomized into an observation group (134 cases, 2 cases dropped out) and a control group (135 cases, 5 cases dropped out). In the control group, the healthy education was provided. In the observation group, besides the intervention as the control group, the auricular point sticking was delivered at gan (CO12), pi (CO13), xin (CO15) and yan (LO5) on one ear in each treatment, combined with periocular needle-embedding technique at bilateral Cuanzhu (BL 2), Yuyao (EX-HN 4) and Sibai (ST 2). There were 2 weeks of interval after 4 weeks of treatment. One course of treatment was composed of 6 weeks and 2 courses were required. Separately, before treatment, after 6 and 12 weeks of treatment, and after 12 weeks (the 1st follow-up visit) and 24 weeks (the 2nd follow-up visit) of treatment completion, the spherical equivalent (SE), SE progression, axial length (AL) progression, accommodative amplitude (AMP), the score of the TCM symptom and the general symptom were observed in the two groups. The safety and compliance were evaluated in the two groups. RESULTS: After 6 and 12 weeks of treatment, and in the 1st and 2nd follow-up visits, SE increased when compared with that before treatment in the two groups (P<0.05), and AMP was larger than that before treatment in the observation group (P<0.05). After 12 weeks of treatment, and in the 1st and 2nd follow-up visits, the progression of SE was slower in the observation group compared with that in the control group (P<0.01, P<0.001). After 6 and 12 weeks of treatment, and in the 1st and 2nd follow-up visits, the progression of AL in the observation group was lower than that of the control group (P<0.05, P<0.01, P<0.001); and in the 1st and 2nd follow-up visits, AMP of the observation group was larger when compared with that in the control group (P<0.05, P<0.001). After 6 and 12 weeks of treatment, and in the 1st and 2nd follow-up visits, the total scores of TCM symptom and general symptom were reduced in comparison with those before treatment in the observation group (P<0.05); after 6 and 12 weeks of treatment, the total scores of TCM symptom and general symptom were lower than those before treatment in the control group (P<0.05). In the 1st and 2nd follow-up visits, the difference of the total score of TCM symptom and general symptom in the observation group was larger than that of the control group (P<0.05). In the observation group, compared with the control group, the scores for pale/dark complexion in the 1st and 2nd follow-up visits and that for lassitude in the 2nd follow-up visit were lower (P<0.05), the score for poor concentration after 12 weeks of treatment and that for poor sleep and memory in the 2nd follow-up visit were lower (P<0.05). There were no adverse reactions in the two groups. The compliance was 98.5% in the observation group and was 96.3% in the control group, without statistical difference (P>0.05). CONCLUSIONS: On the basis of health education, auricular point sticking combined with periocular needle-embedding therapy can effectively prevent from true myopia, control the increase of SE, delay the growth of AL and improve AMP in children with pseudomyopia. This compound therapeutic regimen can relieve the general symptom and comprehensively prevent from myopia through multiple approaches, with high safety and satisfactory compliance.

Corydalis Rhizoma (CR, Yanhusuo in Chinese) has been widely used as an analgesic in herbal medicine and functional food. Cases of fungal and mycotoxin contamination in CR have been reported. In this study, the composition and diversity of fungal microbiome in CR samples from four herbal markets and two processing methods were investigated by DNA metabarcoding. Variations of the fungal microbiome in CR during cold and conventional storage were monitored. Results showed that Aspergillus was the dominant genus and saprotroph was the dominant trophic mode. Six potential toxigenic fungi, namely, Aspergillus fumigatus, Aspergillus ostianus, Aspergillus terreus, Penicillium citrinum, Penicillium oxalicum, and Trichothecium roseum, were detected. Differences in fungal composition and diversity among various groups based on collection areas and processing methods were also observed. Moreover, the relative abundance of dominant genera in CR samples stored at different temperatures was significantly different and changed with storage time. This study is the first to reveal the influence of collection areas, processing methods, and storage conditions on the fungal microbiome in CR, which was expected to provide a basis for control strategies of fungal contamination in the industrial chain of CR.

Objective: Angelicae Sinensis Radix (ASR, Danggui in Chinese), Cistanches Herba (CH, Roucongrong in Chinese), Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (PG, Renshen in Chinese), and Panacis Quinquefolii Radix (PQ, Xiyangshen in Chinese), widely used as medicine and dietary supplement around the world, are susceptible to fungal and mycotoxin contamination. In this study, we aim to analyze their fungal community by DNA metabarcoding. Methods: A total of 12 root samples were collected from three main production areas in China. The samples were divided into four groups based on herb species, including ASR, CH, PG, and PQ groups. The fungal community on the surface of four root groups was investigated through DNA metabarcoding via targeting the internal transcribed spacer 2 region (ITS2). Results: All the 12 samples were detected with fungal contamination. Rhizopus (13.04%-74.03%), Aspergillus (1.76%-23.92%), and Fusarium (0.26%-15.27%) were the predominant genera. Ten important fungi were identified at the species level, including two potential toxigenic fungi (Penicillium citrinum and P. oxalicum) and eight human pathogenic fungi (Alternaria infectoria, Candida sake, Hyphopichia burtonii, Malassezia globosa, M. restricta, Rhizopus arrhizus, Rhodotorula mucilaginosa, and Ochroconis tshawytschae). Fungal community in ASR and CH groups was significantly different from other groups, while fungal community in PG and PQ groups was relatively similar. Conclusion: DNA metabarcoding revealed the fungal community in four important root herbs. This study provided an important reference for preventing root herbs against fungal and mycotoxin contamination.

BACKGROUND: The interaction between microorganisms and medicinal plants is a popular topic. Previous studies consistently reported that microorganisms were mainly considered pathogens or contaminants. However, with the development of microbial detection technology, it has been demonstrated that fungi and bacteria affect beneficially the medicinal plant production chain. AIM OF REVIEW: Microorganisms greatly affect medicinal plants, with microbial biosynthesis a high regarded topic in medicinal plant-microbial interactions. However, it lacks a systematic review discussing this relationship. Current microbial detection technologies also have certain advantages and disadvantages, it is essential to compare the characteristics of various technologies. KEY SCIENTIFIC CONCEPTS OF REVIEW: This review first illustrates the role of fungi and bacteria in various medicinal plant production procedures, discusses the development of microbial detection and identification technologies in recent years, and concludes with microbial biosynthesis of natural products. The relationship between fungi, bacteria, and medicinal plants is discussed comprehensively. We also propose a future research model and direction for further studies.

Lonicerae Japonicae Flos (LJF) has been globally applied as an herbal medicine and tea. A number of reports recently revealed fungal and mycotoxin contamination in medicinal herbs. It is essential to analyze the fungal community in LJF to provide an early warning for supervision. In this study, the fungal community in LJF samples was identified through DNA metabarcoding. A total of 18 LJF samples were collected and divided based on the collection areas and processing methods. The results indicated that Ascomycota was the dominant phylum. At the genus level, Rhizopus was the most abundant, followed by Erysiphe and Fusarium. Ten pathogenic fungi were detected among the 41 identified species. Moreover, Rhizopus, Fusarium, and Aspergillus had lower relative abundances in LJF samples under oven drying than under other processing methods. This work is expected to provide comprehensive knowledge of the fungal community in LJF and a theoretical reference for enhanced processing methods in practical manufacturing.

Fritillaria unibracteata (FU) is a renowned herb in China that requires strict growth conditions in its cultivation process. During this process, the soil microorganisms and their metabolites may directly affect the growth and development of FU, for example, the pathogen infection and sipeimine production. However, few systematic studies have reported the changes in the microbiome and metabolites during FU cultivation thus far. In this work, we simultaneously used metagenomics and metabolomics technology to monitor the changes in microbial communities and metabolites in the rhizosphere of FU during its cultivation for one, two, and three years. Moreover, the interaction between microorganisms and metabolites was investigated by co-occurrence network analysis. The results showed that the microbial composition between the three cultivation-year groups was significantly different (2020-2022). The dominant genera changed from Pseudomonas and Botrytis in CC1 to Mycolicibacterium and Pseudogymnoascus in CC3. The relative abundances of beneficial microorganisms decreased, while the relative abundances of harmful microorganisms showed an increasing trend. The metabolomics results showed that significant changes of the of metabolite composition were observed in the rhizosphere soil, and the relative abundances of some beneficial metabolites showed a decreasing trend. In this study, we discussed the changes in the microbiome and metabolites during the three-year cultivation of FU and revealed the relationship between microorganisms and metabolites. This work provides a reference for the efficient and sustainable cultivation of FU.

Fritillariae Cirrhosae Bulbus (FCB) is a well-known and precious traditional Chinese medicine with a medicinal history spanning thousands of years. In recent years, it has been reported that fungal and mycotoxin contamination influenced the safety and quality of FCB. It is essential to systematically study the fungal community for the early warning of fungal and mycotoxin contamination in this herb. A total of 15 FCB samples were collected from five provinces in China, and the fungal communities in the FCB samples were analyzed via amplifying the internal transcribed spacer 2 region through the Illumina Miseq PE300 platform. Furthermore, we compared the differences in fungal community in five groups based on collection areas. Results showed that Ascomycota (41.58-99.66%) and Mucoromycota (0-57.42%) were dominant at the phylum level. Eurotiomycetes (8.49-63.93%), Eurotiales (8.49-63.53%), and Aspergillaceae (8.49-63.51%) were the most abundant at the class, order, and family levels. Aspergillus (8.49-63.41%), Rhizopus (0-57.42%), Fusarium (0-22.81%), Cladosporium (0.16-9.14%), and Alternaria (0.06-17.95%) were the main genera in FCB samples. A total of 34 fungal taxa were identified at the species level, including five potentially toxigenic fungi namely Penicillium brevicompactum, P. citrinum, P. oxalicum, Trichothecium roseum, and Aspergillus restrictus. The differences in fungal community between the five groups were observed. Our findings provide references for the safe utilization and quality improvement of FCB.

Morindae Officinalis Radix (MOR) and Alpiniae Oxyphyllae Fructus (AOF) have been widely used as dietary supplements and traditional herbal medicines for centuries. Fungal and mycotoxin contamination in MOR and AOF has been reported recently. In this study, fungi in MOR and AOF are first investigated using DNA metabarcoding, and the differences in fungal microbiome between moldy and non-moldy samples are analyzed. The results show that Ascomycota is the most prevailing fungus at the phylum level in MOR and AOF with relative abundances of 49.53-94.32% and 14.81-81.85%, respectively. Penicillium (1.86-76.14%), Cladosporium (1.82-56.65%), and Trichoderma (0.12-19.71%) are the dominant genera in MOR. Penicillium (0.27-56.06%), Papiliotrema (0.04-51.71%), and Cladosporium (3.08-44.41%) are the dominant genera in AOF. Two potential toxigenic fungi were detected, namely, Trichoderma atroviride and Fusarium equiseti. Moreover, the differences in fungal communities between moldy and non-moldy samples were monitored. In conclusion, DNA metabarcoding can be used to assess the fungal microbiome in edible medicinal herbs, thereby providing a basis for ensuring food safety and drug efficacy.

AIMS: Lycii Fructus (LF) is considered as a 'superfood' due to its health benefits and delicious tastes, which has gained popularity worldwide. However, LF is also a proper host for fungal growth due to its abundant nutrients. Fungal contamination seriously affects the quality and safety of LF and poses threats to consumer health. METHODS AND RESULTS: In this study, a total of 15 LF samples were collected from five provinces in China, and were divided into five groups based on the collection areas. Fungal contamination in LF was investigated by targeting the internal transcribed spacer 2 region using Illumina Miseq PE300 platform, and the differences of fungal community in groups based on collection areas were compared. Results showed that the fungal contamination was detected in all the 15 LF samples. Ascomycota, Dothideomycetes, Pleosporales and Pleosporaceae were dominant at the phylum, class, order and family levels, respectively. At the genus level, Alternaria, Cladosporium and Fusarium were the three dominant genera. In all, 24 fungal species were identified. Among which, two species, namely Penicillium oxalicum and Trichothecium roseum, were potentially toxigenic. CONCLUSIONS: All 15 LF samples were detected with fungal contamination. The differences of fungal community in LF samples collected from different areas were observed. DNA metabarcoding was demonstrated as an efficient method to monitor the fungal contamination in LF. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: This work comprehensively reveals the fungal diversity and composition in LF and provides early warning for potential mycotoxin contamination.

Crataegi Fructus, a medicinal and edible herb in China, has been considered a popular dietary supplement globally. It is used for the treatment of dyspepsia and chronic heart failure according to the Chinese Pharmacopoeia (2020). However, fungal contamination in Crataegi Fructus affects its quality and safety, thus preventing its global promotion. In this study, we comprehensively studied the fungal community in processed products of Crataegi Fructus by high-throughput sequencing. A total of 21 Crataegi Fructus samples were collected from five provinces in China, and the samples were divided into five groups based on collection areas, as well as into three groups based on processing methods. We then targeted the internal transcribed spacer 2 sequence through the Illumina Miseq PE300 platform to investigate fungal composition and diversity. Results showed that all 21 samples were detected with fungal contamination, and Ascomycota was dominant at the phylum level. In the groups based on collection areas, Dothideomycetes, Pleosporaceae, and Alternaria were dominant at the class, family, and genus levels, respectively. In the groups based on processing methods, Dothideomycetes, Aspergillaceae, and Alternaria were the most abundant at the class, family, and genus levels, respectively. Differences in fungal communities between various groups were also observed. Furthermore, a total of 115 species were identified, among which seven were potential toxigenic, namely, Trichothecium roseum, Alternaria tenuissima, Aspergillus carbonarius, Penicillium brevicompactum, Aspergillus fumigatus, Rhizopus microspores, and Pichia fermentans. In conclusion, this study reveals great fungal richness and diversity of Crataegi Fructus, providing references for the prevention and control of fungal contamination of Crataegi Fructus in practical production.

INTRODUCTION: Epimedium L., the largest herbaceous genus of Berberidaceae, is one of the most taxonomically difficult representatives. The classification and phylogenetic relationships within Epimedium are controversial and unresolved. OBJECTIVES: For the first time, we systematically studied the phylogeny and evolution of Epimedium based on plastid genome (plastome) data for better understanding this enigmatic genus. METHODS: We explored the molecular phylogeny, assessed the infrageneric classification, estimated the divergence times, and inferred the ancestral states for flower traits of Epimedium based on 45 plastomes from 32 species. RESULTS: The Epimedium plastome length ranged from 156,635 bp to 159,956 bp. Four types of plastome organization with different inverted repeat boundary changes were identified. Phylogenetic analysis revealed a strong support for the sister relationship of sect. Macroceras and sect. Diphyllon but did not provide a distinct route for petal evolution in sect. Diphyllon. Disharmony between phylogenetic relationships and traditional classification of sect. Diphyllon was observed. Results from divergence time analysis showed that Epimedium diverged in the early Pleistocene (~2.11 Ma, 95% HPD = 1.88-2.35 Ma). Ancestral character state reconstructions indicated transitions from long spur (large-flowered group) to other petal types (small-flowered group) in Epimedium. CONCLUSION: These findings provide new insights into the relationships among Epimedium species and pave the way for better elucidation of the classification and evolution of this genus.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the application of computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in combination with vascular endothelial growth factor-C (VEGF-C) and epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) in the identification of endometrial cancer stages. METHODS: Clinical data of 84 patients with endometrial cancer who underwent surgery in our hospital were retrospectively analyzed. Before surgery, they were received inspection by CT and MRI and examination by VEGF-C and EGFR measurement. The pathological results after surgery were used as the gold standard, which was applied to compare the diagnostic accuracy of endometrial cancer stages by CT, MRI, and CT+MRI and to analyze how VEGF-C and EGFR expression and CT+MRI diagnosis correlated with relevant pathological parameters. RESULTS: Using pathological results as the gold standard, the diagnostic accuracy of endometrial cancer stages via CT+MRI combined with VEGF-C+EGFR immunostaining was significantly higher (96.43%) compared with CT+MRI, CT, and MRI (91.67%, 70.24%, and 77.38%, respectively) (P<0.05). The positive rates of VEGF-C and EGFR expression in patients with different endometrial cancer stages identified by CT+MRI were significantly different (P<0.05). Spearman's rank correlation coefficient showed that the positive rates of VEGF-C and EGFR expression were both positively correlated with CT+MRI identified stages (r>0, P<0.05). The accuracy of CT+MRI diagnosed lymph node metastasis, myometrial infiltration, and interstitial infiltration was 90.48%, 92.86%, and 84.52%, respectively. The positive rates of VEGF-C and EGFR expression were significantly higher by lymph node metastasis compared with non-metastasis; the positive rates of VEGF-C and EGFR expression were significantly higher by deep myometrial infiltration compared with superficial infiltration; the positive rates of VEGF-C and EGFR expression were significantly higher by interstitial infiltration compared with no interstitial infiltration (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: CT and MRI combined with VEGF-C and EGFR can effectively identify endometrial cancer stages.

BACKGROUND: The investigation of molecular mechanisms involved in lipid metabolism plays a critical role for the genetic engineering of safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) to increase the oil accumulation level or to change the oil composition. Although transcript sequences are currently available for the leaves and flowers of safflower, a wide range scan of temporal transcripts at different stages of seed development has not been conducted for safflower. RESULTS: In this study, temporal transcriptome sequencing was executed at 10, 14, 18, and 22 days after flowering (DAF) to uncover the molecular networks concerned in the biosynthesis of unsaturated fatty acids (USFAs). The results revealed that the biosynthesis of fatty acids is a dominant cellular process from 10 to 14 DAF, while degradation mainly happens after 18 DAF. Significant expression changes of two genes, stearoyl-[acyl-carrier-protein] 9-desaturase gene (SAD) from 10 to 14 DAF and oleate desaturase (FAD2-1) from 14 to 18 DAF, were detected at the transcriptomic levels, and the temporal expression patterns revealed by the transcriptomic analysis were confirmed using quantitative real-time PCR experiments. In addition, 13 candidate transcription factors (TFs) involved in regulating the expression level of the FAD2-1 gene were identified. CONCLUSIONS: These results create a link between fatty acid biosynthesis and gene expression at different developmental stages of the seeds, provide insight into the underlying lipid metabolism, and meanwhile lay an important foundation for the genetic engineering of safflower varieties. We have identified novel candidate genes, including TFs, that are worthy of further exploration.

Retinoblastoma (RB) is commonly-seen cancer in children. The p53 pathway dysfunction, which can lead to elevated MDM2 or MDM4 (p53 antagonists) protein expression, is frequently observed in almost all human cancers, including RB. The present study attempted to investigate the underlying mechanism from the perspective of non-coding RNA regulation. Here, we demonstrated that p53 and miR-129 were positively correlated with each other in RB. miR-129 directly targeted MDM2/4 to inhibit expression, therefore counteracting MDM2/4-mediated p53 signaling suppression and modulating RB cell proliferation and apoptosis. Moreover, p53 could activate the transcription of miR-129 via binding to the miR-129 promoter region, therefore forming a regulatory loop with MDM2/4 to affect RB progression. Altogether, the p53/miR-129/MDM2/4/p53 regulatory loop can modulate RB cell growth. We provide a solid experimental basis for developing novel therapies for RB.

Platycladi Semen, which is derived from the dried ripe seed of Platycladus orientalis, has been used for the treatment of insomnia and constipation in China for 2000 years. However, it is susceptible to fungal and aflatoxin contamination under proper humidity and temperature during storage. Although aflatoxin contamination in Platycladi Semen has been reported preliminarily, few studies have been conducted on fungal infection and aflatoxin contamination simultaneously. Thus, this work aims to provide an in-depth understanding of fungal contamination in Platycladi Semen, and information on aflatoxin contamination. We focused on a comparison of the difference in fungal diversity between aflatoxin-contaminated and aflatoxin-free Platycladi Semen samples. First, aflatoxin levels in 11 Platycladi Semen samples, which were collected from local herbal markets in Shandong, Anhui, and Hebei provinces throughout China, were determined by IAC-HPLC-FLD, and positive confirmation of detected samples was performed by LC-MS/MS. The samples were divided into two groups, based on production or non-production of aflatoxin. We then used the Illumina MiSeq PE250 platform, and targeted the internal transcribed spacer two sequences to analyze the diversity and composition of the fungal microbiome, as well as to assess the presence of potential mycotoxin-producing fungi. Results showed that five samples were contaminated with aflatoxins, one of which exceeded the legal limits of Chinese Pharmacopeia Commission (2015). At the phylum level, the Ascomycota was the most dominant in all tested samples, with a relative abundance of 83.04-99.46%. Aspergillus (27.88-97.28%), Xerochrysium (0-28.49%), and Xeromyces (0-22.24%) were the three predominant genera. Furthermore, differences in fungal composition between the aflatoxin-contaminated and aflatoxin-free groups, as well as between different provinces were observed. A total of 74 species were identified, and four potential mycotoxin-producing fungi were detected in all samples, namely Aspergillus flavus, Aspergillus fumigatus, Fusarium poae, and Penicillium steckii. In conclusion, we report the great diversity of fungi associated with Platycladi Semen, highlight the risk to consumers of ingesting potent aflatoxin, and provide a reference for the safe application and quality improvement of Platycladi Semen.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Ophiopogonis Radix (Maidong), derived from the dried root tuber of Ophiopogon japonicus (Thunb.) Ker Gawl., has been widely used in the treatment of chronic inflammatory and cardiovascular diseases. However, Ophiopogonis Radix is often adulterated with some species because of morphological similarities. Adulterants circulating in herbal markets are a latent threat to the clinical safety and consumers' interest. AIM OF THE STUDY: We aimed to develop a nucleotide signature for identification of Ophiopogonis Radix and its Chinese patent medicines. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 255 ITS2 sequences representing 39 species and 4 varieties were used to develop a nucleotide signature of Ophiopogonis Radix. The nucleotide signature was used to investigate 17 commercial crude drugs and eight batches of Chinese patent medicines. RESULTS: A 69 bp nucleotide signature unique to Ophiopogonis Radix was found. The survey revealed that 2 of 17 crude drug samples were adulterants detected as Liriopes Radix (Shanmaidong). Fortunately, no adulterants were detected in the eight batches of Chinese patent medicines. CONCLUSIONS: The newly developed nucleotide signature could be efficiently applied to identify Ophiopogonis Radix and its Chinese patent medicines, aiding in the authentication, quality control, and supervision of processed products in herbal markets.

Polyhydroxyalkanoates are polyesters of hydroxyalkanoates synthesized by many bacteria and haloarchaea as carbon and energy storage materials. There are more than 150 types of polyhydroxyalkanoate monomers reported, resulting in a variety of Polyhydroxyalkanoates with diverse properties. The material variability, nonlinear optical properties, piezoelectric properties, gas barrier properties, thermoplasticity, biodegradability, and biocompatibility allow polyhydroxyalkanoates to be used for plastic packaging, chiral chemicals generation, medicine, agriculture and bio-energy fields. This review introduces the current applications and future development of polyhydroxyalkanoates.

Long-term exposure to ultraviolet B (UVB) light increases the risk of UVB damage due to increased UVB absorption by the retina and may further lead to age-related eye diseases. The retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cell is a main target of UVB reaching the retina; its degeneration is an essential event in UVB-mediated age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Herein, we first evaluated the expression and effect of iASPP, an inhibitory regulator of apoptosis, in UVB-induced RPE cell damage. Through the mechanism of RNA interference at the post-transcriptional level, miRNA affects a variety of cellular processes, including UVB-mediated cell damage. We next screened for upstream candidate miRNAs that may regulate iASPP expression. Among 8 candidate miRNAs, UVB significantly increased miR-340 levels. We also confirmed the direct binding of miR-340 to the 3'UTR of iASPP, and assessed the combined effect of miR-340 and iASPP on UVB-induced RPE cell damage. Taken together, we demonstrated the possible mechanisms involved in UVB-induced retinal damage. In RPE cells, UVB irradiation inhibits iASPP expression through inducing miR-340 expression, thereby promoting RPE cell apoptosis and suppressing cell viability via affecting p53, p21 and caspase-3 protein expression. Targeting miR-340 to rescue iASPP expression in RPE cells may help treat UVB-mediated retinal damage.

RESUMO

An efficient fabrication technique for large area periodic metallic split-ring arrays has been demonstrated by the combination of tilted nanoimprint lithography and nanotransfer imprinting. The feature size of the split-rings can be adjusted by varying the key geometry parameters of the original imprinting mold. Due to the flexible nature of PDMS molds, these arrays can be patterned on curved surfaces. The molds for nanoimprint lithography and nanotransfer imprinting can be used multiple times without a loss of fidelity.

To reveal the nature of the zinc(II)-ion-induced ionochromic effect of bipyridine (bpy)-containing pi-conjugated polymers, we proposed an electrostatic interaction mechanism to illustrate our recent experimental findings [Tian, L., et al. J. Phys. Chem. B 2005 109 (15), 6944]. Our theoretical analysis was based on the semiempirical (INDO/2) calculation of spectral properties and electronic structures of difluorene-substituted bpy model compounds. Our calculations show that the zinc(II)-induced ionochromic effect can be attributed to the electrostatic interaction between the zinc(II) ion and the polymer. Zinc(II) ion acts as a positive point charge with varied charge quantities, which is responsible for the red-shifted absorption spectra compared with those of the metal-free compound. The counterion ionochromic effect of the zinc(II) ion is also discussed. The proposed mechanism is possibly applied to the ionochromic effect induced by other metal ions such as Cd(II) and Hg(II).
